These 4 Diesel Cars Will Soon Be Discontinued – Honda, Hyundai

As the new stricter emission regulations, called the Real Driving Emission norms, to come into effect from April 1, 2023, several new diesel cars will be discontinued from the market. Maruti Suzuki, Renault-Nissan alliance and VW Group have already adopted the more greener petrol fuel option for the domestic market. Honda and Hyundai will also discontinue diesel cars in our market in the next few months.

Honda Cars India is reportedly to discontinue its diesel cars from the Indian market. The company may pull the plug on the 1.5-litre diesel engine when new emissions regulations come in to affect in 2023. Takuya Tsumura, President & CEO, Honda Cars India, has already stated that it would be difficult to clear new Real Driving emission norms with the current diesel engine. The new regulations would require vehicles to achieve emission targets in the real world and not just under ideal test conditions.

Honda is currently selling the City, WR-V and Amaze sedan with 1.5L diesel engine. In fact, recent reports suggest that the company will soon discontinue the WR-V and Jazz nameplate from our market. The company is focusing on hybrids for the Indian market. The City sedan is offered with a strong hybrid option. In fact, the upcoming sub-4 meter SUV could also come with a strong hybrid powertrain.

A new report from AutoCarIndia claims that Hyundai will discontinue the i20 diesel from our market. The diesel accounts for 10 per cent of total i20’s sales this year, which is around 700 units per month. The company has already discontinued the diesel versions of the Grand i10 Nios and the Aura compact sedan.

The Hyundai i20 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine, which also powers the Venue, Creat and the Alcazar. The diesel line-up for Hyundai will start from Venue. The 1.5-litre CRDi diesel engine will be upgraded to meet the new RDE norms.
