Tata’s 2 Popular Cars To Get CNG, Electric Powertrain

Tata Altroz hatchback and Punch micro SUV model lineup will further be expanded with CNG variants and their electric iterations. The CNG versions of both cars were showcased at this year’s Auto Expo. In order to save their boot space, the carmaker has setup a new dual cylinder layout above the rear floor. Each cylinder has a capacity of 30-litres. The new Tata CNG cars have a Single Advanced ECU (engine control unit) and Direct State CNG.

The carmaker says that the models feature the first-in-segment leakage detection technology, enabling to switch to petrol in case of a gas leak. Powertrain setup of the Tata Altroz CNG and Punch CNG includes a 1.2L petrol engine with a factory-fitted CNG kit. It offers a maximum power of 77PS and 95Nm of torque. Transmission duties will be done by a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Similar to the regular petrol model, the CNG variants will offer a 7-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a semi-digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, leatherette seat upholstery, electric sunroof, height adjustable driver seat and projector headlamps.

The Tata Punch EV, that made its public debut at the 2023 Auto Expo, is likely to hit roads near around the festive season. The model is based on the adapted version of Alfa platform and could be offered with Tata’s Ziptron powertrain. The new Sigma architecture will make the Punch EV lighter, more spacious and energy efficient than its ICE-powered version. The electric mini SUV could get two battery packs as we have seen in the Nexon EV.

On the exterior, the electric version might feature slightly different bumpers, new wheels  and coloured accents that will distinguish it from its ICE counterpart. The Tata Altroz EV, which is expected to come next year, will receive similar powertrain and design changes.
