Tata Safari, Harrier Petrol Caught Testing; What To Expect

Tata Motors is working on a wide range of new electric vehicles for the Indian market. Adding to it, the company will also update and add new models to its existing range. Tata Motors has recently launched the Safari Gold Edition and the Punch micro SUV, which received overwhelming response from buyers.

Tata Motors is also testing new variants of the Harrier and the Safari. The latest spy images show a fully camouflaged prototypes of these two popular SUVs. The vehicle looks identical to their existing models, which rules out the possibility of facelift models. It is expected that these models could be the petrol derivative of the Harrier & the Safari.

The Harrier and the Safari rivals are offered with petrol and diesel engine options. These two misses out on several potential customers looking to buy petrol powered SUVs. The Harrier twins are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which is sourced from Fiat Chrysler Automobile. This engine also powers the MG Hector and the Jeep Compass. It is capable of producing 168bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor.

It was reported that Tata Motors is working on a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox options. It is likely to be a larger 4-cylinder version of the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that powers the Nexon compact SUV.

Other reports suggest that the company is readying a 1.6-litre petrol engine. The petrol engine will be a direct-injection (DI) unit, which will be more powerful, efficient and release less emissions compared to the MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection) engines. This will be Tata Motors’ first direct-injection unit. It is expected to produce around 160bhp of power and close to 250Nm of torque. The new petrol powered models are likely to come with multiple drive modes and paddle shifters with automatic gearbox.
