In February 2021, Tata Motors sold total of 27,224 passenger vehicles and registered a growth of 119.0 per cent. In the mid-size SUV space, the carmaker offers Harrier and the newly-launched Safari that go up against the MG Hector and MG Hector Plus respectively.
The home-grown carmaker managed to sell 2,030 units of the Harrier and 1,733 units of the new Safari last month. The Hector and Hector Plus combined sales stood at 3,662 units, which is slightly less than (75 units) the Tata SUVs. It’s the first time when Tata Motors took a lead over MG Motor India in the mid-size SUV segment.
One must note that Tata Motors reports its wholesale or dispatch numbers that delivered from its facility to dealerships. MG Motor India, on the other hand, shows its retail figures. The home-grown carmaker aims to strengthen its SUV portfolio with a range of new models in coming years. The company believes that the newly-launched Tata Safari will bring volume and help achieving financial sales targets.
The new Tata Safari and Harrier comes with a 2.0L Kryotec turbo diesel engine that can be had with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic transmission. The motor produces a peak power of 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. Both SUVs come with 2WD system only.
Tata Motors is now gearing up to launch the production-ready version of the Tata HBX mini SUV concept. If reports are to be believed, the model will see a release by mid 2021. Its final model could be named ‘Tata Timero’. The new Tata mini SUV will be based on the Alfa platform that underpins the Altroz premium hatchback. It might come with the 1.2L naturally aspirated and 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine options. Both manual and AMT gearboxes are likely to be on offer.
