Tata Punch EV Breaks Cover; Bookings Open, 5 Variants, Features

Tata Motors has finally revealed the much-awaited Tata Punch EV in the Indian market. Interested buyers can book this all-electric entry-level SUV online or at Tata’s pan-India dealerships by paying a token amount of Rs 21,000. The homegrown automaker has also stated that the new Punch.ev is designed and developed on the company’s new acti.ev architecture.

New Acti.ev architecture

The new acti.ev architecture is an all-new architecture from Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) developed for electric vehicles (EVs). The Tata Punch EV is the first electric model based on this architecture to debut in the Indian market. This architecture will also underpin multiple new Tata EVs and SUVs including the upcoming Curvv EV, the new Sierra EV and the Harrier EV. This platform is compatible with different body styles and battery packs such as cylindrical or prismatic. This includes LFP batteries, which will deliver a range of between 300-600kms and can be charged with either an 11kW AC charger or a 150kW DC charger.

Adding to it, the Acti-EV architecture will be compatible with different drivetrains including front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive. The permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors is expected to offer power output in the range of 80hp to 230hp. The homegrown automaker will have two electric vehicle architectures to develop a wide range of electric vehicles in the coming years.

The electric micro SUV borrows styling, features and variant names from the Nexon EV. It will be offered with two battery pack options. The Punch.ev will be offered in a total of five variants – Smart, Smart Plus, Adventure, Empowered and Empowered Plus. The long range version will be made available in the top three variant levels.

The overall styling elements of the new Tata Punch EV are inspired from the Nexon EV. The electric SUV comes with a split-lighting setup with triangular projector LED headlights and fog lamps. There is a new elongated LED DRL strip on the upper portion. The electric SUV has a newly designed bumper that accommodates a big air dam and a silver skid plate.

The side profile appears identical to the ICE version. It rides on a newly styled 16-inch alloy wheels. The micro SUV has ‘.ev’ badges on the lower portions of the front doors. The rear profile appears identical to the ICE model, except for updated LED tail-lights and silver-finished skid plate.

The new Tata Punch EV is offered in a total of five exterior options – Pristine White with Black roof, Seaweed with Black roof, Daytona Grey with Black roof, Empowered Oxide with Black roof and Fearless Red with Black roof.

Tata Motors has redesigned the cabin of the Punch.ev. The electric micro SUV comes with EV-specific changes with central AC vents and upholstery. It comes with redesigned central air-conditioning vents, an all-new centre console, Tata’s new twin-spoke steering wheel and new leatherette upholstery for seats.

The Tata Punch.ev electric SUV shares several features from its bigger sibling (the Nexon EV). It comes with a new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, voice navigation. In terms of features, the electric SUV gets a wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera, electronic parking brake with auto hold, an air purifier, a ventilated front seats, etc. Adding to it, the Punch.ev is fitted with an all-new 10.25-inch digital instrument console.

The lower variants will receive a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system and digital cluster. The Long range variants will be fitted with jewelled rotary drive selector from the Nexon EV. The micro electric SUV will also receive a sunroof as an option. In terms of safety features, the electric SUV gets 6 airbags, ABS and ESC as standard, blind view monitor, three-point seat belts for all seats, ISOFIX mounts, and an SOS function.

Specs

The company hasn’t shared specific technical details of the Punch.ev. It is expected to be offered with two battery pack options – Medium Range (MR) and Long Range (LR) with former likely to get a 25kWh battery pack. The LR version is expected to come with 35kWh battery pack. The Medium Range version gets a 3.3kW AC charger, while the LR version gets a 7.2kW AC charger. The electric SUV can also support DC fast charging. It is expected to deliver a range of around 300km to 400km.
