January 2024 proved to be a profitable month for the Indian automobile industry, with nearly 3.94 lakh passenger vehicles sold, marking a 14 percent increase from the corresponding month last year. The industry witnessed a month-on-month sales growth of 37 percent compared to December 2023. India’s top four automakers – Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra – recorded year-on-year sales growth of 13.2%, 14%, 11.8%, and 30.4%, respectively. Maruti Suzuki’s product range contributed over 49 percent to the top 25 best-selling cars of the month.

In the SUV segment, the Tata Punch emerged as India’s top-selling SUV with total sales of 17,978 units, marking a 50 percent year-on-year sales growth from January 2023. The second spot was secured by another Tata SUV – the Nexon – which clocked sales of 17,182 units compared to 15,567 units in the previous year. Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza claimed the third position with total sales of 15,303 units, up from 14,359 units in the same month last year.
The Mahindra Scorpio, Maruti Fronx, and Grand Vitara occupied the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots in the list of India’s top-selling SUVs, with total sales of 14,293 units, 13,643 units, and 13,438 units, respectively. Hyundai Creta experienced a year-on-year decline of 12 percent, recording sales of 13,212 units in January 2024. It’s noteworthy that the Creta facelift was launched in mid-January and has garnered over 51,000 bookings to date. Hyundai will soon introduce the sportier N Line version of the SUV.
The sub-compact SUVs – Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet – secured the eighth and ninth spots with sales of 11,831 units and 11,530 units, respectively. The Mahindra Bolero, with total sales of 9,964 units, rounded off the top ten best-selling SUVs in India, followed by the Hyundai Exter, Mahindra XUV700, Kia Seltos, and Mahindra Thar.
