Tata Altroz Turbo With A New 7-Speed DCT Gearbox Coming In 2021

We informed you earlier that Tata Motors will soon introduce a new turbocharged version of the Altroz hatchback. In fact, the Altroz Turbo has already been caught testing multiple times in India. A new report claims that the Turbo will be equipped with a new DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission) gearbox option.

The Tata Altroz Turbo will be powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 110bhp of power and 140Nm of torque. The report claims that the hatchback will receive a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox sourced from Punch and the gear shifter will be supplied from Lumax. The component maker Schaeffler will provide certain critical parts for the new automatic gearbox.

The Tata Altroz Turbo DCT will be positioned against the new Hyundai i20 1.0L DCT, VW Polo 1.0 TSI torque convertor automatic, Maruti Suzuki Baleno CVT and Honda Jazz CVT. It was speculated that the Altroz will receive a Punch-sourced 7-speed ‘DT-1’ dual-clutch transmission. However, Tata Motors opted for the wet-clutch unit over the more affordable, dry clutch gearbox from the Belgian company.

The Tata Altroz Turbo DCT will weigh around 1,058 kgs, which is just 22kg heavier than the regular 1.2L petrol version. With this engine-gearbox combination, the turbo Altroz is expected to offer excellent power to weight ratio and performance. The new gearbox combination is expected to be offered on the top-spec model. The new model is expected to be introduced in the first quarter of 2021.

The Turbo version looks exactly similar to the regular model. It’s the ‘iturbo’ badge on the black rear section that distinguishes it from the regular petrol version. The regular Tata Altroz is available with two engine options – a 1.2L naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel. The former is good for 85bhp at 6,000rpm and 113Nm at 3,300rpm, while the  oil burner produces 89bhp at 4,000rpm and 200Nm between 1,250-3,000rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard across the lineup.
