Suzuki & Toyota To Co-Develop 2 SUVs For India – More Details

Suzuki and Toyota JV is working on an all-new mid-sized SUV for the Indian market. Codenamed D22, the new Toyota SUV is reportedly to be introduced by Q3, 2022. Moreover, the JV is also working on an all-new electric SUV for the Indian as well as global markets. Moreover, Toyota is also working on a new C-segment MPV – codenamed 560B for the Indian market.

The JV will launch the new mid-sized SUV before the end of 2022. The new model will have two versions – one each for Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. Both models will have different designs and interiors. However, the SUVs will share body panels and features. The new mid-sized SUV will be produced at Toyota’s facility in Bidadi, Karnataka.

It is reported that the new model will be based on Toyota’s new low-cost DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) that also underpins the Toyota Raize sub-compact SUV. This platform is designed for emerging markets. The new model is reportedly to be powered by Toyota’s petrol-hybrid powertrain. The vehicle will also get petrol engine option, which could be the existing 1.5L K15B petrol engine with SHVS mild hybrid system.

All-New Electric SUV

Maruti Suzuki & Toyota JV is working on new electric strategy, which comprises of local development of EVs for domestic as well as international markets. First Maruti Suzuki electric vehicle will be an all-new mid-sized SUV, codenamed YY8. It is likely to make global debut in Europe around October 2024, while India-launch expected in the first half of 2025.

The new electric mid-sized SUV will be based on a different derivative of the 40PL platform, which is codenamed 27PL. The platform will be used to develop a wide range of family EVs starting from compact cars, MPVs or SUVs. The first mid-sized electric SUV will be based on the 27PL. The new mid-sized SUV will have a high level of local content, including the battery pack. The battery pack will be sourced from TDSG, a large-scale battery manufacturing JV between Suzuki, Denso and Toshiba.
