The much-awaited Renault Kiger production model has finally made its global debut in India. This will mark Renault’s entry into the fastest growing sub-4 meter SUV segment, which is currently dominated by Kia Sonet, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Tata Nexon.
CMF-A+ platform
The new Kiger sub-4 meter SUV is based on the CMF-A+ modular platform that also underpins the Renault Triber. It is the same platform that underpins the Kwid; however, Renault-Nissan alliance has tweaked the platform to make it stronger. In fact, the new Nissan Magnite sub-4 meter SUV is also designed and developed on this platform.
Styling
Renault claims that the production version of the Kiger compact SUV shares close to 80% of the design with the Kiger Showcar. The SUV’s design remain true to its concept, featuring aggressive design elements and crossover-ish body. Upfront is a signature winged grille with two horizontal slats and split headlamp set-up. While the LED DRLs are placed on top, the main headlight placed lower down the bumper.
The Renault Kiger gets squared-off wheel arches, dual-tone bumper, black plastic cladding and split tail-lamps. Similar to the showcar, the production-model has sloping rear glass, roof-integrated spoiler and uniquely-styled C-pillar. The small SUV rides on 16-inch alloys.
Renault Kiger Interior
The Kiger comes equipped with all-new cabin design, some of the components are shared with the Triber MPV. The sub-4 meter SUV comes with a dual-tone interior scheme along with new dashboard and central console design. It gets a floating 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, digital instrument console, automatic AC, dual glovebox, cruise control, around view monitor, etc. The SUV is claimed to offer an impressive boot space of 405-litres. The SUV also gets air purifier.
The SUV featured Auditorium 3D sound system by Arkamys, with a technology that diffuses 3D sound. It offers 8 speakers (four boomers and four tweeters). The system also automatically adjusts sound volume according to the speed of the vehicle at higher trim levels.
Kiger Colors
The sub-4 meter SUV is offered in 6 colour options – Ice Cool White, Planet Grey, Moonlight Grey, Mahogany Brown, Caspian Blue, Radiant Red with Mystery Black Roof. All variants are available in single as well as in dual-colour options; however, the top-end variant gets Radiant Red under two-tone colour scheme.
Dimensions
In terms of proportions, the new Kiger 3,991mm long, 1,750mm wide and 1,600mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,500mm. It is 3mm shorter, and 8mm less wide compared to the Magnite; however, the height of the Kiger is 28mm higher than the Magnite. The SUV offers a boot space of 405-litres, which is segment-leading. This is 69-litres higher than the Magnite’s boot space.
Renault Kiger Engine Options
Not just platform, the new Kiger shares the engine options with the Magnite sub-4 meter SUV. It is available with 2 engines – a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol. While the former is good for 72bhp of power and 96Nm of torque, the turbocharged engine produces 99bhp and 160Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox will come as standard, while a CVT automatic unit will be offered with the 1.0L turbocharged engine. It offers multi-drive mode. The Kiger Turbo manual version is claimed to return an impressive fuel economy of 20kmpl.
Expected Price & Launch
The new Kiger will be one of the most affordable in its category. It will come as an affordable alternative to the likes of the Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon and the Hyundai Venue. The new model is likely to be positioned slightly above the Magnite, which is priced between Rs 5.49 lakh and Rs 9.45 lakh. The new Renault Kiger is likely to be priced around Rs 5.8 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
Renault has officially announced that the Kiger will go on sale in the next few months. It is likely to be launched in March 2021.
