Next-Gen BMW 3 Series Electric In The Works; Over 700km Range

BMW is reportedly working on the next generation 3 Series, which will be an all-new electric car. The current model was first introduced in the end of 2018, and is yet to receive a mid-life facelift. The next generation BMW 3 Series electric will be introduced in 2025. It will be based on an all-new architecture, which will be developed especially for electric vehicles from the BMW Group.

According to Autocar UK magazine, BMW will introduce the Neue Klasse EV platform with an all-electric 3 Series – internally called “NK1”. The next-gen BMW 3 Series will also be offered with combustion engines – Gasoline and Diesel. This will allow BMW to serve all customers.

The report claims that the new BMW 3 Series electric will have a larger wheelbase and a flat floor, which will translate into significantly spacious cabin than the combustion model. This platform is being developed to use a single powertrain and rear-wheel drive, as well as an xDrive variant with twin engines and all-wheel drive.

To achieve lighter weight and minimize the weight increase due to electrical system and battery pack, BMW will use aluminum as well as carbon fibre frame in some areas, and carbon fiber reinforced plastic. It is reported that BMW will work on an eco-friendly cabin with recycled materials as in the iVision Circular concept, which was presented at the 2021 Munich Motor Show.

BMW is also working on its own electric powertrains, which will be more powerful and efficient than the current engines. The vehicles will support a charging system of up to 350 kW. The report further claims that the new BMW 3 Series will have an estimated range of over 700km.
