Tata Motors has registered a total cumulative domestic sales of 53,430 units in the last month of the previous year (December, 2020). In the passenger vehicle segment, the carmaker sold 23,545 units as opposed to 12,785 units of the same month a year earlier. It recorded a sales growth of 84 percent, thanks to Nexon, Altroz, Tiago and Harrier. In December 2020, the company sold 6,835 units of the Nexon subcompact SUV against 4,350 units of the same month in 2019. This makes the Tata Nexon the brand’s top-selling model for the month. While the Tata Altroz recorded total sales of 6,600 units, the Tiago hatchback registered sales of 6,066 units as opposed to 4,558 units of December 2019. The Harrier was the fourth best-selling Tata model with total sales of 2,223 units, followed by the Tigor compact sedan that clocked sales of 1,822 units. Last month, Tata Motors managed to retain the third position in the list of India’s top 5 car manufacturers.
The home-grown carmaker recently confirmed that the Tata Altroz iTurbo will be the company’s first product launch in 2021. Slated to hit roads on coming 13th January, the model will come with a 1.2L, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine that’s good enough for 110bhp and 140Nm of torque. Initially, it will be made available with a 5-speed manual gearbox only. The carmaker will introduce a new DCT (dual-clutch transmission) gearbox at a later stage.
After the Altroz iTurbo, the company will bring in the new flagship SUV – the Tata Safari. The new Safari is essentially the production-ready Gravitas based on the Omega platform that also underpins the Harrier SUV. The new 7-seater SUV will use the 170bhp, 2.0L Kryotec diesel engine with 6-speed manual and torque convertor automatic transmission options. It’s the same powertrain that does duty in the Harrier 5-seater.
