Toyota is currently selling the Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV as a Creta Rival SUV in India. However, this SUV mainly targets India and African markets. On the flip side, Toyota has revealed a new Creta-sized SUV – called the Yaris Cross in Indonesia. This SUV won’t be introduced in our market and will mainly rival the Hyundai Creta in ASEAN & Brazilian markets.
For people not in the know, Toyota is selling Yaris Cross crossover in the European markets. It is a different model compared to the one sold in Europe. The new model is based on a different platform with styling inspired from the Corolla Cross and RAV4 SUVs, and is bigger than the European model. This SUV will also go on sale in Brazil in 2024.
The new Toyota Yaris Cross is based on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform, which is a low-cost version of the TNGA platform. It measures 4,310mm in length, 1,770mm in width and 1,615mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,620mm. The new model is closer to the Hyundai Creta that measures 4300mm.
The new Toyota Yaris Cross is visually completely different from the European sibling. It shares styling cues from bigger Toyota SUVs including the Corolla Cross, RAV4 and the Highlander. The front fascia features a wide trapezoidal grille, angular headlamps with an LED line at the top and vertically stacked fog lamps.
The diamond shaped lanterns appear identical to that of the RAV4, but without the chrome bar. The cabin will follow the styling of the Yaris sedan. It comes with a new 10.1-inch floating screen and a 7-inch digital instrument console. In terms of equipment, the new Yaris Cross gets 6 airbags, stability control, blind spot monitor, electronic parking brake & parking sensor.
For the ASIAN market, the new Toyota Yaris Cross is available with two engine options – a 1.5-litre NA petrol and a 1.5L petrol engine with a hybrid system. The NA engine is capable of producing 106 hp and 137 Nm of torque, with 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox.
The hybrid version gets a 1.5L engine producing 80 hp with an electric motor rated at 90 hp. If reports are to be believed, the SUV could also get a different hybrid variant at a later stage. It will use an electric propellant to move the car, while the combustion engine will work as a power generator.
