New MG Platform To Spawn Compact SUV, MPV & Hatchback

Buoyed by positive response for Hector and ZS EV, MG Motors is now planning to introduce multiple new models in the country in the near future. The company will launch a new mid-sized SUV, which is basically the petrol derivative of the ZS EV, in the month of September 2021. Adding to it, the brand is also working on a new compact electric SUV to be positioned below ZS EV.

MG Motors is also developing an all-new platform, which will be designed and developed for the India-specific products. After witnessing the strong growth, SAIC Motor Corporation is ready to invest in designing and developing an all-new, sub-4 meter platform. This platform will be versatile enough to accommodate different bodystyles.

MG will first launch a compact SUV on this platform, followed by an MPV and finally a hatchback. The compact MPV segment has witnessed strong demand, which is evident from the success of Renault Triber and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. In fact, Kia Motors and Hyundai will also enter into the compact MPV segment. MG will face stiff competition in the hatchback segment, which is dominated by Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai.

The report claims that the MG compact SUV is expected to be launched only after 2023, and the MPV and hatchback will arrive on a later stage. The new model range is expected to help MG Motors to achieve break-even volumes of around 2 lakh cars per year. MG Motors is also looking to set-up a new production plant in India. Adding to it, the brand is ready to partnerships and sharing capacity with another manufacturer. The company could join hands with Volkswagen Group. In fact, Ford is also in talks with MG Motors.

The new MG compact SUV will be positioned against the likes of the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra XUV300. Adding to it, Renault and Nissan are also selling the Kiger and Magnite compact SUVs respectively in the affordable segment. Citroen, Skoda and Jeep are readying their respective compact SUVs for the Indian market.
