New MG Electric Car To Challenge Tata EVs – Pricing Game!

MG Motor India has confirmed that it will launch a mass-market electric car in the second quarter of 2023 (i.e. April-June). The model is reported to be called MG City EV that’s expected to be priced between Rs 11 lakh – Rs 15 lakh. If launched at this price point, the new MG electric car will take on the existing Tata EVs including Tiago EV, Tigor EV and Nexon EV. All Tata EVs are currently available within the price range of Rs 8.49 lakh – Rs 17.50 lakh (ex-showroom).

Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director, MG Motor India, has revealed that the company will source batteries for its mass-market EV from local vendors in order to achieve competitive pricing. The automaker aims to provide low cost of ownership to its Indian EV buyers. Therefore, it will analyze which combination of battery chemistry and charging solution works best for the Indian market.

Under its MGDAP (MG Developer Program), the British automaker is collaborating with tech start-ups to innovate on battery chemistry and charging solutions for the local market. The automaker expects that its new MG City EV will generate “good volumes”. MG’s Halol based facility in Gujarat will serve as production hub for the electric car. The automaker also aims to increase production of the MG ZS EV from 300-350 units to 500 units per month. It will also ramp up production of the MG Hector from 2000 units to 4000 units on monthly basis by January 2023. By the end of this calendar year, MG Motor India will register sales of 55,000 – 56,000 units. It aims to increase its sales by double folds in 2023.

Talking about the upcoming MG electric car, the model will be based on the China-spec Wuling Air EV. It might come with battery capacity of around 20kWh – 25kWh delivering power close to 40bhp. Its range will be around 150km in real world condition.
