New Maruti Suzuki Y43 Small SUV In The Works; Tata Punch Rival

Maruti Suzuki is all set to enter the electric vehicle segment with the production of the eVX electric SUV in the country in 2024. The company is currently selling 4 SUVs including the Brezza, Jimny, Fronx and the Grand Vitara and has over 20 per cent share in the UV segment. In order to further boost sales, MSIL is now preparing to launch a new entry-level SUV and a 3-row SUV for the Indian market. These two SUVs will go on sale in our market in the next 2 to 3 years.

If reports are to be believed, Maruti Suzuki will launch a new three-row SUV, internally codenamed Y17, in the country by 2025. It is based on the Grand Vitara and will come with a strong hybrid powertrain. Expected to be priced somewhere between Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, the new SUV will be manufactured at the brand’s upcoming Kharkhoda plant.

Maruti Suzuki will launch a new A-segment SUV, internally codenamed Y43, sometime in 2026-27. The new small SUV will come as an alternative to entry hatchback buyers. It will rival the likes of the Hyundai Exter and the segment-leader Tata Punch micro SUV. Speaking to Autocar Professional, Hisashi Takeuchi, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India said that the company does not have enough SUVs and there are gaps to fills. He believes that the main SUV categories are 4 metres and 4.3 metres; however, it will expand further into subcompact & bigger midsized SUV segments.

The report claims that the new entry-level SUV and the mid-sized SUV will bring in additional sales of 2.5 lakh units per annum. The brand’s 4 SUVs have helped the company to double its SUV market share to over 20 percent in the fiscal year to date. The company aims to regain the 50 percent market share and these two SUVs will play an important role to achieve this target.

While details about the entry-level SUV are not known, we believe that the new A-segment hatchback will be based on the modified HEARTECT platform that underpins the Baleno and the Fronx. This A-segment SUV is expected to share the styling cues with the Brezza and the Grand Vitara. It will rival the segment-leader Tata Punch and the Hyundai Exter. It is expected to be offered with a new 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with a hybrid system. This engine has recently debuted in the new gen Suzuki Swift hatchback, which will be launched in our market by March 2024.
