New Honda Compact SUV To Challenge Sonet, Venue, Nexon

We have reported earlier that the Japanese carmaker is considering foray into the subcompact SUV space with an all-new model. The new Honda compact SUV will be an answer to the newly-launched Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra XUV300. While there is no official word on its India launch timeline, the new Honda compact SUV is expected to hit roads in 2022 or 2023.

The Japanese carmaker might use the Amaze’s platform for its upcoming subcompact SUV. It’s a lightweight architecture, which is compatible to different body styles and engines. The small SUV could be made available with two engine options – a 1.0L turbo petrol and 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol with Honda’s compact hybrid system – e-HEV. The turbo-petrol unit, which will be borrowed from the new City, is good enough for 120bhp and 173Nm. Transmission choices might include both manual and automatic units.

In the company’s Indian product portfolio, the new Honda compact SUV will sit above the Honda WR-V. It will be a global product that will also be launched in other emerging markets. If reports are to be believed, the model might make its world debut near around May, 2021. More details on the upcoming new Honda small SUV are likely to be revealed in near future.

In other news, Honda will unveil the new-generation HR-V mid-size SUV for the Indian market in March, 2021. Details of the new model are expected to arrive this month as the carmaker will begin dealership training sessions for the SUV in Japan. Rumour has it that the Honda HR-V might hit Indian shores by the end of this year. If launched, it will be put up against the cars like Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. It could be offered with strong hybrid powertrain that includes a 1.5L petrol engine and two electric motors.
