More Affordable Baja Chetak Electric Scooter Variant Under Testing

Bajaj Auto is actively focused on expanding its electric two-wheeler lineup, with particular attention to the Chetak model. Recent sightings of a prototype of the Chetak e-scooter suggest that the company is developing a more budget-friendly variant. From clandestinely captured snapshots, it’s evident that the prototype of the Chetak e-scooter showcases a significant departure with a hub-mounted electric motor.

In contrast to the current Chetak model, the rear wheel of this new variant is fully enclosed within a plastic shroud. However, the spied model still utilizes a double-sided swingarm similar to the current model and features a mid-mounted motor paired with multi-spoke alloy wheels.

New Bajaj Chetak

This decision to introduce a more affordable Chetak variant comes in response to substantial reductions in FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) incentives. The strategy aims to maintain profitability while simultaneously boosting sales in the electric vehicle sector. The new, more affordable iteration of the Chetak is expected to be priced under Rs 1 lakh, in contrast to the existing version available at Rs 1.15 lakh (ex-showroom). Bajaj Auto had previously announced its plan to introduce a new electric two-wheeler every year for the next 3-4 years. These new Bajaj electric scooters and bikes will fall under the Chetak sub-brand and offer different powertrain setups to cater to various segments. The Pune-based two-wheeler manufacturer is focused on strengthening its supply chain and distribution while enhancing software, hardware, technology, product quality, and customer experience.

New Bajaj Chetak Variant

Bajaj plans to increase its annual EV production capacity from 8,000-9,000 units to 50,000 units in the next fiscal year. The company’s new EV-dedicated Akurdi plant in Pune, which required an investment of Rs 300 crore, is set to produce 2.50 lakh units annually.

Earlier this year, Bajaj introduced the new Chetak Premium Edition, offering three color options – Stain Black, Matte Coarse Grey, and Matte Caribbean Blue. This model features a larger color LCD console, a new dual-tone seat, a Stain Black grab rail, body-colored rearview mirrors, and matching pillion footrest castings.
