MG ZS Electric Could Get A Cheaper Variant With Smaller 40kWh Battery

MG Motors has recently announced to launch multiple new electric cars in the near future. The brand’s next all-new electric car will be a compact SUV, which will be positioned against the Tata Nexon EV. A new leaked document suggests that MG Motors could also offer a more affordable variant of the MG ZS Electric in our market.

The leaked document reveal that the MG ZS Electric could be offered with a smaller 40 kWh battery pack. MG Motors is currently offering the ZS EV with a 44.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The new battery pack could replace the existing battery or could be offered as an optional. We believe that this could be the move to offer a more affordable variant, which could target the prospective Nexon EV buyers.

MG ZS EV Smaller Battery Document

The smaller battery should offer less range. While the current model offers a range of 415km, the ZS EV with smaller battery should offer a range around 350kms. The move will surely bring down the overall cost of the vehicle.

The current model has the 3-phase permanent synchronous motor that produces 140bhp and 353Nm of torque. It is claimed to return an impressive 419kms range.  The vehicle accelerates to 100kmph from zero in just 8.5 seconds. The MG ZS Electric can be charged with a 50kW DC fast charger. The SUV’s battery can be charged up to 80 percent in 50 minutes. Using a standard AC charger, it takes 6 to 8 hours for a full charge.

A new report claims that MG will also introduce two new electric cars – a compact SUV and hatchback based on the Baojun E200 platform. These two cars will be launched after 2024. The upcoming MG EVs will be priced below Rs 10 lakh and target mass market.
