MG4 Electric Hatchback Unveiled In India – 450Km Range

MG Motor India has showcased the new MG4 electric hatchback at the ongoing 2023 Auto Expo. It is the first of a series of MG models based on the new MSP (Modular Scalable Platform). Not just MG4, the British carmaker has also launched the facelifted versions of the Hector and Hector Plus SUVs at the auto event.

The MG4 electric is already on sale in Europe and is offered in 3 versions – Standard with 350km range, Comfort and Luxury with up to 450km range in the WLTP cycle. Dimensionally, the MG4 electric is 4,287mm long, 1,836mm wide and 1,504mm tall, and has a long wheelbase of 2,705mm. The electric hatchback offers a boot space of 350-litres, which can be extended up to 1,165-litres by folding the rear seats.

The MG 4 electric vehicle has recently received 5-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash test. It scored 83 percent for adult protection, 80 percent for child occupant protection, 75 percent for pedestrian protection and 78 percent for safety assist systems. The tested model was equipped with front, side head, side chest & side pelvis airbags along with seatbelt pretensioner, seatbelt loadlimiter & seatbelt reminder.

The electric hatchback comes with ADAS tech with features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assistance, lane departure warning & lane keeping assistance. The vehicle also gets Intelligent Headlamp Control & the Speed Assist System (SAS) with traffic sign recognition. Adding to it, the electric hatch gets blind spot detection, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, door opening warning, and unsteady driving warning.

The new MG 4 EV comes with a striking front fascia with sculpted bonnet featuring strong creases and blanked-off front. It features stylish headlamps and tilted upright indicators along with 28 LEDs and six vertical fibre-optic stripes. Three units of fog lamps and low beam are combined with LED turning lights. The rear tail-lights have 172 LEDs and a rear light strip that runs across the width. The electric hatch gets dual-tone roof, and a dual-wing roof spoiler.

The hatchback’s air resistance coefficient is between cW 0.27 and 0.287, and this is achieved by the active configuration of the application of cooling air in the front skirt. When less cooling air is required, it closes the air inlet, improving aerodynamic performance by up to 30 percent and extending range by up to 10 percent. The hatchback features the dual-tone 17-inch alloy wheels shod with Continental 215/55 section tyres. The electric hatch is available in 7 colour options – Pebble Black, Dover White, Medal Silver, Andes Grey, Diamond Red, Brighton Blue and Fizzy Orange.

In terms of features, the MG4 Electric comes with a 360 degree camera, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a floating 10.25-inch infotainment screen with iSMART connectivity system, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, air conditioning and others. The MG iSmart also provides a navigation system that enables real-time routing with online support, featuring voice control, and wide-ranging vehicle remote access. The electric hatchback also offers Vehicle-To-Load function, which act as a mobile power bank to charge external devices such as e-bikes, smartphones and computers with an adaptor cable.

The model is available with the 51kWh and 64kWh battery pack options delivering power worth 170bhp and 203bhp respectively. Both versions have a single-motor, RWD system and offer a maximum torque of 250Nm. Using a 7kW AC fast charger, the 51kWh & 64kWh batteries can be fully charged in 7.5 hours and 9 hours respectively. The batteries can be juiced up from 10 to 80 percent in 35 minutes & 39 minutes by using a 150kW DC charger.
