Meet the Toyota Fortuner Flex-Fuel SUV – All Key Details

The Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2023 has witnessed intriguing new product unveilings and launches. Among them is the Toyota Fortuner flex-fuel, featuring a heavily modified 2.7L, 4-cylinder petrol engine designed to run on 100 percent bioethanol. Significant changes have been applied to its ECU (engine control unit) and fuel system. This setup yields a maximum power of 163bhp and 243Nm of torque, making it slightly more potent (by 3bhp) and torque-rich (by 2Nm) compared to the regular gasoline unit.

The Toyota Fortuner flex-fuel employs an automatic gearbox to transmit power to the rear wheels. While the overall design and styling of the flex-fuel Fortuner mirror its regular petrol counterpart, distinguishing elements include the white and green livery. The flex-fuel version retains the glossy black front grille with the signature chrome badge in the center, a black fog lamp assembly, black ORVMs, pronounced square wheel arches, a black rear spoiler, and LED taillamps connected via a chrome bar.

In India, the Japanese automaker is preparing to introduce the new-generation Fortuner sometime next year. The SUV will undergo comprehensive upgrades in terms of technology, features, design, and powertrain. The 2.8L turbo diesel engine will be coupled with a 48V battery and a small electric motor. With the incorporation of mild hybrid technology, the new Fortuner is expected to deliver improved fuel efficiency. It will be built on a new platform and share design elements with the new Tacoma pickup truck.

Regarding features, the upcoming 2024 Toyota Fortuner will include vehicle stability control and a hydraulic steering wheel. Additionally, the ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) suite will be offered, encompassing adaptive cruise control, lane departure assist, automatic emergency braking, automatic parking assist, blind spot detection, and forward collision warning.
