Mahindra XUV400 Name Trademarked; Could Be Creta, Seltos Rival

We reported earlier that Mahindra is readying a new mid-sized SUV, which could be called the XUV400. The company has now trademarked the Mahindra XUV400 nameplate, which makes us believe that a new mid-sized SUV is under development. However, Mahindra is yet to make an official announcement on the same.

The Mahindra XUV400 is likely to be an urban SUV, which will be positioned against the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun and the Skoda Kushaq. The company is already selling the Scorpio SUV, which is more popular among semi-urban and rural regions.

Mahindra Grille TUV300

The new SUV could be positioned between the XUV300 and the XUV500. It is likely to measure around 4.3 meters in length, which is similar to the Creta and the Seltos. It was speculated to be based on the Ford’s VX-722 platform; however, this is not going to happen. Mahindra and Ford proposed joint venture has been called off.

It is expected that the new Mahindra XUV400 could be based on the Mahindra’s X100 platform, which also underpins the XUV300 compact SUV. This platform is compatible enough to accommodate a larger body and multiple engine options. It is basically the modified version of the SsangYong’s X100 platform, which underpins the Tivoli and the Tivoli XLV. The Tivoli XLV is basically the long-wheelbase version of the standard model, offering more rear space and boot space. Similarly, the XUV400 could be based on the updated platform, and could be offered with 5- and 7-seat options.

The Mahindra XUV400 is expected to be powered by the brand’s new G15 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which was unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo. This direct-injection engine churns out 163bhp of power and 280Nm of torque. Diesel version could receive the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that powers the Marazzo and the XUV300. While powering the MPV, this engine produces 120bhp and 300Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic versions are likely to be on offer.

Upcoming Mahindra SUVs

Mahindra is gearing up for the launch of the much-awaited new XUV700 SUV, which will be positioned above the XUV500. Scheduled to be launched in Q3, 2021, the new SUV will rival the Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and the Hyundai Alcazar. The company is also developing a new XUV500, which will rival the Tata Harrier and the MG Hector. The next-gen Mahindra Scorpio will arrive in late 2021 or early 2022. Adding to it, Mahindra will introduce the Bolero Neo which is basically the re-badged TUV300.
