Global NCAP is conducting crash tests of Made-in-India cars under its #SaferCarsForIndia programme since 2014. In the past 8 years, more than 50 cars were tested by Global NCAP. Recently, GNCAP has also expanded its test parameters with the inclusion of three-point seatbelts for rear passengers, rear seat belt reminder, active safety systems and stable structure.
The latest crash tests show Made-in-India SUVs capability to keep passengers and driver safe during collision or accident. GNCAL has also added side impact test and electronic stability control (ESC) capability. In latest round of crash tests, Made-in-India cars are tested in 4 different ways – frontal offset test at 64kmph, a side impact test at 50kmph and a side pole impact at 29kmph, and ESC performance.
Cars tested under new protocols include Mahindra Scorpio N, Maruti S-Presso, Maruti Swift, Maruti Ignis, Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq. The VW Taigun and Kushaq were the first to be tested under the updated testing protocols. Both SUVs are officially the safest made-in-India cars, securing 5 star safety rating for both adult and child occupants safety.
The Mahindra Scorpio N has received 5 star safety rating for adult protection and 3 star rating for child occupant safety. Maruti Suzuki cars failed to secure good ratings, as all three models scored 1 star rating in adult production. In fact, the S-Presso and the Ignis scored zero rating in child protection test.
Not just Scorpio-N, the Mahindra XUV300 and XUV700 have also scored 5 star crash test rating by Global NCAP. Tata also has an equal number of 5-star rated models including the Punch, Altroz and Nexon. The other 4-star rated cars from homegrown automakers include Marazzo, Thar, Tiago and Tigor. In fact, the Honda Jazz, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Maruti Brezza, Renault Kiger, 4th-gen Honda City, Nissan Magnite and Renault Triber have also received 4-star crash test rating. List of cars with 3 star adult protection ratings are Kia Carens, Maruti Ertiga, Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
