Jeep recently announced three new product launches for India that will take place this year. The plan outlines the updated Jeep Compass Trailhawk, Jeep Meridian 7-seater SUV and locally-assembled Jeep Grand Cherokee. Earlier, there were reports stating that the American SUV manufacturer has been planning to enter into the highly competitive sub-4 meter SUV segment with a new model. But conditions in the Indian automotive market seemed to have taken a toll, with the brand now deciding to drop its launch plan.
Globally, the Jeep SUVs are known for their off-road/4X4 capabilities and built quality. It would be quite difficult for the brand to achieve a balance between the cost and 4X4 traits for its upcoming small SUV. Even if the company brings in the subcompact SUV with off-road capabilities, it won’t be a viable offering in the cost sensitive Indian market. A fresh media report claims that the automaker might consider the new-generation Jeep Renegade for India.
The all-new Jeep Renegade is likely to underpin the brand’s ‘Small Wide 4X4’ platform and use the new 1.3L turbocharged petrol engine. If launched in India, the SUV will be positioned against the cars like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Asstor, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun.
Meanwhile, Jeep India is gearing up to launch the new Compass Trailhawk next month (i.e. March 2022). Unofficial bookings have already been commenced at select dealerships. It will be followed by the all-new Jeep Meridian 7-seater SUV that will lock horns against the Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster. The model is slated to launch in May 2022.
Powering the SUV will be 2.0L Multijet II diesel engine that does duty in the Compass. Though, the motor could be re-tuned to generate extra power. The Meridian will be available with both 6-speed manual and 9-speed automatic gearbox options. Its petrol version with a 1.3L turbo petrol engine is reported to arrive at a later stage.
