India’s 25 Best-Selling Cars – 10 Maruti, 5 Hyundai, 4 Mahindra

In October 2023, the Indian automotive industry enjoyed remarkable success, with sales figures surging by over 16 percent compared to the same month the previous year. Nearly 3.91 lakh passenger vehicles were sold, marking the fourth consecutive month in which sales exceeded the 3.5 lakh milestone. Out of the top 25 selling cars, they accounted for over 76 percent of total car sales in October 2023. When examining the top twenty five selling models, Maruti Suzuki dominated with ten models, followed by five from Hyundai, four from Mahindra, three from Tata, two from Kia, and one from Toyota.

India’s two top-selling cars in October were both from Maruti Suzuki, namely the WagonR and Swift, registering sales figures of 22,080 units and 20,598 units, respectively. In the competitive SUV segment, the Tata Nexon continued to maintain its top position, reporting sales of 16,887 units, a substantial increase compared to the 13,767 units sold in October 2022, representing a remarkable year-on-year growth of 23 percent.

Maruti Suzuki’s Baleno hatchback and Brezza subcompact SUV claimed the fourth and fifth positions with sales figures of 16,887 units and 16,050 units, respectively. The Tata Punch secured the sixth position with sales of 15,317 units, marking a 39 percent increase over October 2022. The seventh position was secured by the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, with sales amounting to 14,699 units, as compared to 12,321 units in the same month of the previous year. Further down the list, the Maruti Suzuki Eritga claimed the eighth spot as India’s eighth best-selling car, with sales of 14,209 units, reflecting a noteworthy year-on-year growth of 35 percent.

Top selling SUVs

In a surprising turn of events, the Mahindra Scorpio managed to surpass the Hyundai Creta, securing the fourth position in the list of India’s top-selling SUVs. The Scorpio, which includes both the Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic variants, recorded a total of 13,578 units sold in the previous month, marking an impressive 83 percent year-on-year increase in sales. Hyundai Creta closely followed with sales of 13,077 units, trailing the Scorpio by a mere 501 units.

The Maruti Suzuki Eeco secured the eleventh position among the best-selling cars with sales totaling 12,975 units. Following closely, the recently updated Kia Seltos claimed the twelfth spot with 12,362 units sold. Hyundai’s Venue and Maruti Suzuki’s Fronx maintained the thirteenth and fourteenth positions in India’s list of top-selling cars, boasting sales figures of 11,581 units and 11,357 units, respectively. Maruti Suzuki successfully retailed 11,200 units of the Alto hatchback, although this number represented a decline from the 21,260 units sold previously.

Further down the rankings, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Mahindra Bolero, and XUV700 collectively achieved total sales of 10,834 units, 9,647 units, and 9,297 units, earning them the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth positions among the best-selling cars in the country. The Toyota Innova Crysta held the nineteenth spot with sales amounting to 8,183 units, while the Hyundai Exter, i20 Elite, and Grand i10 recorded sales figures of 8,097 units, 7,212 units, and 6,552 units, respectively.

Kia’s Sonet subcompact SUV, set to receive a mid-life update early next year, registered sales of 6,493 units in October 2023. The Tata Altroz secured the twenty-fourth spot with sales of 5,984 units, and the Mahindra Thar claimed the twenty-fifth position with sales totaling 5,593 units.
