Hyundai Bayon – A New Compact Crossover Teased

Korean automker, Hyundai is getting aggressive with its SUV product strategy globally. We reported earlier that the brand is readying 4 new SUVs for the Indian market. The company is already selling a sub-4 meter SUV in the form of the Venue in Asia and the United States. Interestingly, Hyundai will soon have a new crossover measuring around 4 meters in length for the European markets. The company has released a new teaser of its upcoming compact crossover, called the Hyundai Bayon.

The new Hyundai Bayon compact crossover has already been spotted testing in Europe. It is expected to be launched in early 2021. The company hasn’t revealed much information about the Bayon. It is expected to use the new i20 platform, as the European-spec model is 4.04 meters long. This platform is compatible enough to accommodate bigger size crossovers, as the Kona is also based on this platform.

Hyundai Venue Flux Features

The new crossover will be offered in front-wheel-drive layout and will get petrol engine options. The company could also use the new i10 Nios or Venue platform to achieve competitive pricing for the new crossover. The SUV is likely to be offered with two engine options – a 1.0L 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol and a 1.2L 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol. While the former offers two states of tunes – 100bhp/172Nm and 120bhp/172Nm, the 1.2L engine is good for 82bhp and 113Nm of torque. Transmission choices are likely to include a 5-speed manual with 1.2L engine, a 6-speed MT and a 7-speed DCT with 1.0L engine.

The design details of the new crossover remains a mystery; however, the teaser shows the lights in different shape compared to the i20 or the Venue. It is likely to feature the signature cascading front grille, LED signature headlamps and boomerang-shaped LED tail-lamps. The teaser also shows a very wide red line on the trunk lid.

To be positioned below the Kona, the new Hyundai Bayon will be launched in Europe in the first half of 2021. The new small crossover is expected to be designed and developed exclusively for the European markets, as the Venue is doing good for Hyundai in rest of the markets.
