Honda New Global Compact SUV Launch Timeline, Engine Details

Japanese media reports that Honda is preparing an unprecedented compact SUV for the global markets. The new SUV will be smaller than the Japanese or European-spec HR-V and will be positioned against the Toyota Yaris Cross. The report claims that the new Honda compact SUV is scheduled to make global debut around spring next year that’s between March & June 2023.

This compact SUV will be based on the current Fit or the international-spec Jazz. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that also powers the Thai-spec City RS. While powering the new City RS, this engine produces 120bhp at 5,500rpm and a peak torque of 173Nm at 2,000-4,500rpm. A 7-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT) will come as standard.

There is a possibility that the new Honda compact SUV could get a 1.5-litre e:HEV that also powers the City hybrid and the Fit. The hybrid system comprising of a 98bhp, 1.5L petrol that runs on an efficient Atkinson cycle. The powertrain is also aided by two electric motors – one work as generator and another work as a traction motor. The maximum usable power is 126bhp and the maximum combined torque stands at 253Nm ((engine offering 127Nm & the electric motor offers 253Nm).

Upcoming Honda SUV For India

Honda is also reportedly planning to introduce the production version of the RS SUV concept this month in Indonesia. This model will be positioned against the likes of the Toyota Raize, Daihatsu Rocky, and the Kia Sonet.

The new Honda compact SUV for the Indian market will be based on the Amaze platform. It is rumoured to be unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo in January. If reports are to be believed, the production of the India-spec model will commence by August 2023. The new model will rival the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet and others. It is likely to share the engine options with the City sedan.
