Hero-Harley to Jointly Develop 500cc Bike to Challenge Royal Enfield

In October 2020, Hero MotoCorp and Harley Davidson announced a partnership for the Indian market. Under this tie-up, the home-grown bikemaker will sell and service Harley Davidson motorcycles in the country. The company will also retail Harley accessories and apparels via brand-exclusive – Harley-Davidson and existing Hero dealerships. Besides this, Hero will develop and sell a range of premium motorcycles under the Harley-Davidson brand.

According to a latest media report, Hero will also retail high-end bikes under its own brand which are being made for Harley-Davidson. These will be the middleweight bikes will come with engine capacity ranging from 500cc to above. In India, however, the middleweight bikes usually range between 350cc-400cc. The segment is currently ruled by Royal Enfield offering Bullet 350, Classic 350 and Meteor 350.

Niranjan Gupta, Chief Financial Officer at Hero MotoCorp, has revealed that the company aims to tap the profitable middleweight motorcycle segment to challenge the dominate player (Royal Enfield) that holds around 90% market share. The new motorcycles, which will be developed under the new tie-up, will be sold under the Harley and Hero brand names. The company’s dedicated teams have already starting working on the new premium motorcycles.

Compare to Harley motorcycles, the new Hero premium bikes with the same capacity engine are likely to be more affordable. As of now, there is no official word on the upcoming new Hero and Harley-Davidson premium bikes. Currently, Hero offers three 200cc bikes including XPulse 200, XPulse 200T and XTreme 200S. The company has over 70% market share of the entry-level commuter segment (100cc – 110cc) in the country.
