Here’s Why Maruti Alto K10 Scored 2 Star Safety Rating – Global NCAP

The Maruti Alto K10 is one of the four Made-in-India cars that were crash tested in the latest round by the Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programs), with the other three being the Maruti WagonR, Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus. Maruti Suzuki’s WagonR and Alto K10 scored 1 star and 2 star safety ratings respectively. Talking about the Maruti Alto K10, the hatchback gets 2 star safety rating for adult occupant protection and zero star rating for child occupant protection.

The entry-level hatchback scored 21.67 points out of a total of 34 in adult occupant protection tests. In the frontal offset and a side movable deformable barrier test, it received 8.2 points and 12.4 points respectively. The car provided good protection to driver’s and passenger’s head and neck in the frontal impact test. Though, the chest and knees protection rated as marginal for both. In the side impact test, the hatchback offered good head and pelvis protection, adequate abdomen protection and poor chest protection.

The safety body rated its bodyshell and footwell area as stable and capable of withstanding any further loadings. The Alto K10 managed to score only 3.52 points out of maximum 49 points. While the 3-year old child dummy (with forward facing child seats and adult seatbelts) exposed to high head injuries, the 18-month old child dummy (with rear facing child seat and adult seatbelts) received good head protection and weak chest protection.

Why Maruti Alto K10 scored 2 star safety rating in Global NCAP?

The Alto K10 doesn’t comply with GTR9/UN127 pedestrian protection standards. The hatchback lacks three-point seat belts for all occupants, CRS and Isofix child seat anchorages. Its standard safety doesn’t include electronic stability control. The model that’s currently on sale in India is equipped with dual front airbags, front seat belt reminders and seat belt pretensioners.
