Ford In Talks With Tata Motors – India Return With Hybrids, EVs

Ford Motor Company is planning to make a re-entry in the fast growing Indian automotive industry. The company has patented multiple products including the new Endeavour, Mustang Mach-E electric crossover and an all-new mid-sized SUV in India. A new media report claims that Ford is in talks with Tata Motors for a possible joint-venture.

The JV will facilitate Ford’s re-entry in the Indian market. The American automaker is planning to introduce electric and hybrid vehicles in the country. The company had two manufacturing facilities in India – Sanand and Chennai. Tata Motors acquired the Sanand plant and the transaction happened without any hassle. The company was in talks with JSW Group for the sale of its Chennai plant; however, the deal was cancelled in the final stages.

Ford Motor Company is likely to use the Chennai based plant to locally assemble or manufacture EVs and hybrids along with its global SUVs for India as well as other international markets. The recent patent applications from the Ford Motor company also hints towards possible re-entry with the Endeavour and the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV.

Ford has also filed a design patent of a compact SUV, which could also be introduced in the Indian market. The company could introduce a new SUV to rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and others. However, Ford could use electric or hybrid powertrains to power the new SUV. The new SUV could be called the new EcoSport; however, official details are yet to be revealed.

Tata Motors is likely to help Ford Motor Company to start its new journey in the Indian market. The homegrown UV maker is currently dominating the EV sales with over 70% market share.
