2023 Tata Harrier, Safari Facelifts -Is 1.5L Petrol Engine On Cards?

Tata Motors’ highly popular SUVs, namely the Nexon, Harrier, and Safari, are set to receive major updates in the coming months. The Nexon facelift is expected to arrive by August, while the new Harrier and Safari are reported to go on sale in October 2023. The latter two models might enter production in September. The 2023 Tata Harrier and Safari will feature significantly improved design and more advanced technology.

Tata’s new 1.5L turbo-petrol engine

One of the most important updates could be found under the hood with the introduction of Tata’s new 1.5L turbocharged direct injection petrol engine. While the carmaker has not yet confirmed its availability for both SUVs, this new 1.5L gasoline motor, showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo, meets the BS6 Phase II emission standards and is capable of running on a 20 percent petrol-ethanol (E20) fuel blend.

What’s special about it?

The new engine stands out due to its aluminum construction, which promises improved performance and higher fuel efficiency compared to Tata’s existing engines. It incorporates features like dual cam phasing, a variable oil pump, and an integrated exhaust manifold per cylinder head. The water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger enhances torque delivery at lower rev ranges for better acceleration. Read – Tata Frest Name Trademarked In India – Is it for Curvv SUV?

Tata claims that the new engine has a lower cost of ownership and a longer service life, thanks to the new valve trains and timing chains. It generates a peak power of 170bhp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000rpm and 3,500rpm. This same powertrain will also be used in upcoming Tata SUVs like the Sierra and Curvv.

In addition to the new turbo-petrol engine, the 2023 Tata Harrier and Safari SUVs will feature a new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The higher trims of the SUVs will exclusively offer advanced driver assistance technology (ADAS).
