2021 Tata Tigor EV Global NCAP – 4 Stars Rating; 1st Ever EV Crash Test

The newly-launched 2021 Tata Tigor EV has achieved four star safety rating in the latest Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash test.  It’s the first ever electric vehicle to be tested by global safety watchdog under their ‘Safer Cars For India’ initiative. The new Tigor EV has received 4 stars for both adult and child occupant protection with scores of 12 points out of 17 and 37.24 points out of 49.00 respectively. Just so you know, the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) Tata Tigor was subjected to the Global NCAP last year and scored 34.15 points for child occupant protection and 12.52 points out of 14 for adult occupant protection.

One must note that the safety body tested the entry-level variant of the new Tata Tigor EV 2021 that comes with the standard dual front airbags and seat belt reminder for driver and co-passenger. Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP said that Tata’s fleet range has shown consistent safety improvements and the Tigor EV demonstrates that it’s possible with the electric vehicles as well despite a technical challenge due to its electric powertrain system.

The Global NCAP crash test results show that the new 2021 Tata Tigor EV offers good protection to the driver’s head and adequate protection to the front passenger’s head. While the neck protection for front occupants was rated good, the driver’s chest protection was adequate and co-driver’s was good. The driver and co-passenger’s knees protection, however, was rated as marginal. The new Tata Tigor EV 2021 model misses out on the Isofix child seat anchorage and that’s the reason it received 4 star safety rating for child occupant protection.

The bodyshell of the new Tata Tigor EV was rated as unstable and failed to withstand further loadings. In fact, its footwell area was rated as unstable. The Global NCAP officials say that that the electric sedan could have perform better with Isofix seat mounts, 3-point belts in all seating positions, side impact protection and electronic stability control (ESC).
