2021 Mahindra Scorpio, XUV500 Caught Doing High-Altitude Testing

Mahindra will launch the new generation Scorpio and the XUV500 in the second half of 2021. The new models were planned to be launched in the first half of 2021; however, launch has been delayed due to global shortage of semi-conductor chips. While the new XUV500 will arrive in mid-2021, the new Scorpio will go on sale before Diwali 2021.

The 2021 Mahindra Scorpio and the new XUV500 have been caught testing numerous times in production-ready form. This time, the production version of the SUVs have been caught testing in the high altitude region of Kinnaur and Spiti. Mahindra is testing a total of 5 units, which includes 2 new-gen XUV500 (1 with sunroof and 1 without sunroof), and 3 new Scorpio (2 with sunroof and 1 without sunroof).

What’s interesting is that the second generation Mahindra Thar was also snapped alongside the new XUV500 and the Scorpio. This could be the more powerful version of the Thar petrol, which is rumoured to be powered by 180PS mStallion Pro Turbo engine.

The spy images confirm that the new Mahindra XUV500 will receive a huge panoramic sunroof. On the other hand, the new Scorpio will receive the standard factory-fitted sunroof, and not the panoramic. The new Scorpio will be based on the new ladder on frame chassis, which also underpins the second-gen Thar. The new model looks significantly bigger than the outgoing model, which will result into more space inside the cabin.

In terms of styling, the new Scorpio gets all-new body panels, a new 7-slat front grille and new headlamp cluster. The SUV gets a wider central and lower air dams, new front bumper and C-shaped LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps). The SUV retains the boxy shape, featuring tall pillars, pronounced wheel arches, flat roof and rear profile and 17-inch multi-spoke alloys. It gets new LED tail-lamps, roof integrated spoiler with brake lights, new bumper and skid plate.

The new Mahindra XUV500 will also grow in size, and will be offered in 6 and 7-seat layouts. Te SUV features a bolder and larger seven-slat grille, new angular headlamp clusters with boomerang shaped LED DRLs, wraparound LED tail-lamps, roof integrated spoiler with brake light, shark fin antenna, A-pillar mounted ORVMs with integrated blinkers, sloping roofline and multi-spoke alloy wheels.

The 2021 Mahindra Scorpio and the XUV500 will be offered with the new engine options – a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and a 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol. The Scorpio’s diesel and petrol engines will offer around 158bhp and 152bhp respectively, while the XUV500’s diesel and petrol engines will produce about 180bhp and 190bhp respectively.
