Mahindra had launched the new-gen Thar lifestyle SUV in 2020. The SUV has received an overwhelming response from car buyers, as it still commands a waiting period of around 6 months. The company is preparing a new 5-door Thar SUV, which will be more practical than the 3-door model. The Mahindra Thar 5-door SUV has been spotted testing multiple times on the Indian roads. It will rival the likes of the Maruti Jimny and the Force Gurkha 5-door version.
The Mahindra Thar 5-door model is likely to be unveiled 2023, while launch is likely to arrive in the end of next financial year. The new model has been spotted testing again. The latest spy images reveal that the new model will offer an experience close to that of standard SUVs. It will come with a single-pane sunroof, which is evident from the latest test mule. The new model could be a hard top variant with removable panels.
The 3-door Mahindra Thar does not have a sunroof, as it has the manual convertible top variant. The soft-top option to 5-door Thar won’t be a practical option. The new Mahindra Thar 5-door SUV will be based on the new Scorpio-N’s ladder-frame chassis that’s made of high-strength steel. The lifestyle SUV will be longer than the 3-door Thar and shorter than the Scorpio-N. The SUV could also share the pentalink rear suspension with the new Scorpio-N.
The overall width and height of the 5-door Thar are likely to remain the same, while the wheelbase will be increased to create more space in the second-row. The longer wheelbase could impact its off-road capabilities, as the ramp-over angle of the 5-door Thar could be lower than the 3-door Thar. It can be had with either 6 or 7 seating configurations. In terms of features, the SUV will get 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with the smartphone connectivity & navigation, an 8-way adjustable driver’s seat, steering mounted controls, multiple airbags, rear parking and others.
It will be offered with a 2.0L turbo petrol and 2.2L turbo diesel engine, which also powers the 3-door version. The motors could be tuned for generating extra power and torque. Both manual and automatic gearbox will be on offer.
