India’s Top 5 Two-Wheeler Makers; Hero No. 1

Two-wheeler industry witnessed a sales decline of 27.6% in the month April as compared to March 2021. A total 8,65,134 units of the bikes and scooters were sold last month against 11,95,445 units of March 2021. Hero Motocrop retains the top spot with sales of 2,99,576 units, gaining 1.5% market share in April 2021, which is one of the highest month-on-month (MoM) gains.

The home-grown two-wheeler maker currently holds a 34.63% market share. Models like Hero Splendor, HF Deluxe, Super Splendor, Glamour and Passion are the major contributors in the total sales of the company. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India stood at number 2 with total sales of 2,17,882 units, accounting a decline of 30.4%. The Activa scooter and CB Shine are two major volume generators for the Japanese two-wheeler maker in the country.

TVS Motor Company and Bajaj Auto also suffered a de-growth of 28.0% and 28.6% respectively. While TVS managed to sell 1,28,365 units against 1,78,377 units of March 2021, Bajaj Auto recorded sales of 98,041 units as opposed to 1,37,352 units of March 2021. Royal Enfield was the fifth largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country. The Chennai-based bikemaker sold 42,120 units last month against 60,189 units of March 2021.

Yamaha and Suzuki grabbed the sixth and seventh spots with total sales of 34,817 units and 33,699 units respectively. A total of 3,362 units of Piaggio models (Vespa scooters) were sold last month. Classic Legends managed to sell 2,036 units, registering month-on-month sales decline of 18.7%.

In other updates, most of the two-wheeler makers are planning to foray into the electric bike and scooter segments in coming years. Hero MotoCorp and Taiwan-based Gogora will jointly develop new technologies and products for the Indian market. The home-grown two-wheeler maker might roll out a new lightweight electric scooter that will be based on the Gogoro VIVA electric scooter. The latter one was recently trademarked in India.
