New Mitsubishi Outlander To Source X-Trail’s Engine; Debut In 2021

The next-gen Mitsubishi Outlander will finally make global debut in the first half of 2021. It is reported that the next-model will source the 2,500cc 4-cylinder engine from the Nissan Rogue, or the X-Trail. For people not in the know, Nissan has the largest shares in Mitsubishi. Similar to the Mitsubishi Xpander and Nissan Livina, the next Outlander will share underpinnings with the Nissan X-Trail.

Nissan and Mitsubishi will help each other in developing new products and technologies. By sourcing the engine from Nissan, Mitsubishi will aim to save cost of development of the new model. The company is currently focusing on developing electric engine technology. In fact, most of the brand’s funds will be spent on making electric cars.

It is also reported that the next Outlander will also get PHEV technology with a 2,400cc engine, battery, 2 electric motors and AWD system that offers a range of more than 600km.  Other media reports claim that Nissan could also borrow Mitsubishi’s PHEV technology to make the X-Trail PHEV. This could be the part of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance to achieve cost reduction strategy by sharing platforms and engines.

It is expected that the new model could be inspired by the Engelberg Tourer concept, which was unveiled in Geneva last year. The spy images suggests that the new SUV has thin and stylish horizontally stacked headlamps and sculpted front engine that connects the rectangular grille to the high-set hood, and rear fender creasing. This design highlights seems largely identical to the concept vehicle.
