Tesla on Location Hunt in India for Setting Up $2 Billion Factory

The recently announced EV policy by the Union Govt opened the floodgates for several big electric automakers like Tesla and Vinfast. It has been years now that we have been hearing about Tesla’s purported entry in the Indian market. However, it seems as if that time has finally come when we will witness Tesla cars running on our roads.

Last week, it was learnt that the American EV maker was scouting for locations in India to set up its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for the production of electric cars. Reportedly, Tesla is in touch with three Indian states namely Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu for this purpose. Some representatives of the brand are also in talks with the Telangana state government.

The biggest update in Tesla’s entry into the Indian market is that it has already started the production of models that it intends to sell in the country. The company has begun production in limited numbers for India at its Gigafactory in Germany. It is believed that Model 3 and Model Y will be introduced in India initially via the CBU route. Tesla India Motor and Energy Pvt Ltd have already leased office space in Pune to start operations. It is being learnt that the US-based automaker will invest somewhere around $2 billion – $3 billion. The factory in India will not only be used for producing India-spec models but also for export purposes. More details regarding the same are expected to be out in the coming days.
