Tata Motors is planning to enter the CNG passenger vehicle segment, which has been dominated by Maruti Suzuki. The company is gearing up for the launch of the two new CNG powered vehicles – the Tiago CNG and the Tigor CNG – in January 2022.
Few Tata dealerships have already started accepting pre-bookings for the CNG-powered Tiago and Tigor. However, Tata is yet to make an official announcement on the same. Official announcement is expected in the coming weeks. The CNG versions of the Tiago and Tigor have already been spotted testing multiple times on the Indian roads.
The CNG versions will look identical to the regular petrol models, and won’t receive major changes. It is expected that the Tiago CNG and the Tigor CNG will be based on the lower and mid-level variants of the regular variants. However, details about the new models are yet to be revealed.
The regular models are powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Revotron petrol engine that is capable of producing 86bhp of power and 113Nm of torque. The CNG versions will receive the same powertrain; however, power and torque figures are likely to receive marginal drop. The vehicle will get manual gearbox as standard. These variants could receive new CNG badges on the front fenders and on the rear profile.
The Tata Tiago CNG variant will rival the likes of the Hyundai Santro CNG and the Maruti Wagon R CNG. On the other hand, the Tigor CNG will rival the Hyundai Aura CNG. MSIL is also working on the CNG variant of the Dzire sub-compact sedan, which will rival the Aura CNG and the Tigor CNG.
Prices of the Tata Tiago CNG and the Tigor CNG are likely to be around Rs 50,000 – Rs 60,000 higher than its standard counterparts. The Tata Tigor will be the only model to offer CNG, petrol and electric derivatives in the market.
