The new Mahindra Scorpio-N scored 5-star crash test rating from Global NCAP under its ‘Safer Cars For India’ campaign. However, the same model has received a zero-star rating in the recently concluded crash test by Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) test. Mahindra had introduced the new Scorpio N SUV in Australia in April 2023 and New Zealand in August 2023.
According to the Australasian NCAP test, the new ANCAP safety rating applies to all variants of the SUV. This zero rating is essentially due to a more stringent protocol followed by ANCAP, where a car needs to have ADAS fitment. This technology is not available on the Mahindra Scorpio N.
The new Mahindra Scorpio-N has received 17.67 points out of maximum 40 in adult occupant protection. The SUV has been awarded with 39.27 points out of 49 in child occupant protection. It also managed to score 23 percent in Vulnerable Road User Protection and 0 percent in safety assist.
The SUV is fitted with dual frontal, side chest-protecting and head-protecting airbags as standard. According to the ANCAP, the side head-protecting airbags do not extend to protect occupants seated in the third row. It also misses out on the centre airbag, which prevent occupant-to-occupant interaction. The ANCAP’s assessment is based on six-seat variants available in Australia; however, the New-Zealand has a 7-seater variant with a bench-type in the second row. The centre seat is fitted with a lap-only seatbelt, which does not offer the same level of protection as a three-point seatbelt.
The Mahindra Scorpio-N misses out on autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, or a lane support system (LSS). Moreover, the seatbelt reminder system is only available for the front seats. According to the ANCAP, the Scorpio-N also misses out on driver monitoring system, a speed limit information function and child presence detection.
Top tether anchorages are not fitted to the centre seating position in the second row of seven-seat variants or third row seating positions of any variant. ANCAP stated that “this vehicle is not suitable for transporting young children in these seating positions.”
