Japanese two-wheeler manufacturers, Honda and Suzuki are planning to enter the electric vehicle space of the Indian market. Honda has officially announced that its first electric scooter will be launched by March 2024. On the other hand, Suzuki will introduce its first electric scooter in India by FY2025.
Honda’s 1st electric scooter
Honda will launch the electric version of the existing Activa scooter, which will feature a transplanted electric powertrain replacing the engine. The company said that the new Activa electric will come with a fixed-battery set-up and offer a maximum speed of 50kmph. Honda’s 2nd electric scooter will be launched after the Activa EV, and will be based on a completely new platform.
The brand’s 2nd EV will come fitted with a swappable battery set-up and offer high performance. The company aims to localise the e-motor as well as the battery in India. This will help Honda to achieve competitive pricing. The company will also set up battery-swapping stations across all its 6,000 consumer touch points in the country.
Suzuki’s 1st electric vehicle
Suzuki has officially announced that its electric two wheeler for India will be launched in Financial Year 2025. In a press release, Suzuki said that the electric vehicle will be a “small to midsize motorcycle that will be used for daily transportation”. We believe that the new model could be an electric scooter, as Suzuki is already testing the Burgman electric on the Indian roads.
