The long-awaited Triumph’s entry-level motorcycles, called the Triumph Speed 400 & Scrambler 400 X have been officially unveiled. These are the first motorcycles designed and developed under the Triumph and Bajaj partnership. Bajaj will manufacture these motorcycles in India and will be exported in several international markets. Both bikes will be launched in the Indian market on July 5, 2023, and are expected to be priced around Rs 3 lakh.
The Speed 400 shares the styling cues from the Speed Twin 900 aka Street Twin, while the Scramler 400 X design is inspired from the Scrambler 900. The new motorcycles are powered by an all-new single-cylinder engine, called the TR-series powertrain. This 398cc, liquid-cooled engine features DOHC architecture, and is capable of producing 40bhp at 8000rpm and a peak torque of 37.5Nm at 6500rpm.
The power and torque figures are closer to KTM’s 373cc engine; however, the peak power and torque are available at an early stage. The powertrain is coupled to a 6-speed gearbox. The powertrain has triangular engine cover on the right side, and resembles the Triumph’s larger modern classic models.
The new motorcycles are based on a hybrid spine/perimeter frame that is built from tubular steel. Both motorcycles features the same powertrain setup, but the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X have differences in the chassis department. Triumph claims that both bikes come with a dedicated chassis & suspension setup.
The Speed 400 rides on 17-inch wheels shod with Metzeler Sportec M9RR rubber, while the Scrambler rides on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloys wrapped in Metzeler Karoo Street tyres.
For suspension duties, the new Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X get 43mm big-piston front fork and a monoshock at the rear. The Scrambler get 150mm of travel at each end, while the Speed 400 has 140mm front and 130mm rear travel.
While the Scrambler features a 320mm front disc, the Speed has 300mm front disc unit. The Scrambler 400 has a kerb weight of 179kg and the Speed has a kerb weight of 170kg. Due to longer suspension travel, the Scrambler has a ground clearance of 835mm. The Speed 400 has a more accessible seat height of 790mm.
In terms of features, the Triumph Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400 X come with ride-by-wire throttle, traction control and dual-channel ABS, a semi-digital instrument console, a torque-assist clutch, a USB-C charging sock, an all-LED lighting system, and a steering look and an anti-theft immobiliser as standard.
The instrument console feature a large analogue speedometer and integrated LCD screen which includes a digital tachometer, a fuel range and a gear indicator. The Scrambler has a switchable dual-channel ABS for off-road use.
