A New Tata MPV In the Works? – Ertiga or Innova Fighter

Tata Motors is making significant strides in the automotive industry. The homegrown automaker has recently updated four of its popular SUVs: the Nexon, Nexon EV, Harrier, and Safari. Looking ahead, the company has confirmed its plan to introduce the production-ready Curvv coupe SUV in early 2024. Initially, this model will be launched with an electric powertrain, followed by its internal combustion engine (ICE) version. Furthermore, Tata has set a target for the launch of the Tata Sierra SUV in 2025. Much like the Curvv, the Sierra.ev will be the first to hit the market, with its ICE counterpart following suit.

Shailesh Chandra, the Managing Director of Tata Motors, has also disclosed the company’s intention to enter a segment that is currently unrepresented in its product portfolio. While remaining tight-lipped about the specifics of this upcoming model, it is widely anticipated to be a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). In the compact MPV segment, there are currently options like the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Toyota Rumion, Kia Carens, and Mahindra Marazzo. Additionally, the segment includes offerings such as the Maruti Suzuki Invicto, Toyota’s Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross, and in the luxury MPV category, vehicles like the Toyota Vellfire and Kia Carnival are present.

Tata Harrier 2023

Concerning pricing and positioning, the forthcoming Tata MPV, if indeed in development, is likely to compete with vehicles like the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Innova. It may be introduced to cater to both private buyers and the fleet segment. Specific details remain scarce at this juncture. However, it is expected that the new Tata MPV will be designed using the OMEGARC (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced Architecture) platform, which also underpins the Harrier SUV. This monocoque architecture is known for its optimized torsional and bending stiffness.

Tata claims that the OMEG platform features auxiliary isolation panels to manage noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels effectively. Furthermore, the advanced automated manufacturing line ensures robust quality and reliability, and the platform, constructed from high-strength steel, includes efficiently designed crumple zones.
