5 Upcoming Electric Cars From Maruti & Toyota

Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and Honda are some of the rare automotive brands who have not forayed into the EV segment in the Indian market. However, the wait is going to be over very soon, as the Japanese duo of Maruti Suzuki & Toyota are all set to introduce a slew of electric cars in India. Hence, in this piece, we have listed down the upcoming electric cars from Maruti and Toyota in the domestic market.

1. Maruti Suzuki eVX

Maruti Suzuki EVX Concept EV

The eVX is going to be Maruti Suzuki’s first-ever fully-electric car in the Indian market when it launches in early 2025. Being unveiled as a ‘Concept’ at the 2023 Auto Expo in Jan, it will be sold in India through the brand’s premium NEXA range of dealerships. Maruti Suzuki eVX will carry a 60kWh battery pack which will return a driving range of 550 km on a single charge. The all-electric SUV will measure 4.3 metres in length while some of the notable features expected on-board are ventilated front seats, wireless charger, automatic climate control and SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. Built on a new electric skateboard platform, it has already been spotted as a test mule multiple times on Indian roads.

2. Toyota Urban SUV Concept

Toyota Urban SUV Concept

Toyota Urban SUV Concept was unveiled last year in concept form and it is expected to enter production by late 2024. Based on the Maruti Suzuki eVX, it will share several elements with its Maruti cousin such as platform, exterior panels and interior upholstery. As far as dimensions are concerned, Toyota has made it official that it will measure 4,300 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width and 1,620 mm in height. Toyota Urban SUV will be available with both front wheel drive and all wheel drive systems. As for the battery pack and driving range, it is going to be identical to the eVX. Toyota will introduce the Urban SUV in European markets with the India launch happening at a later stage.

3. Maruti Suzuki YMC & Toyota MPV

Maruti Suzuki will go ballistic with its EV range in the next couple of years. Once the eVX SUV hits the roads in early 2025, the brand will introduce an all-electric MPV in the form of the YMC as part of its strategy to become India’s biggest EV producer by 2027-28. Maruti Suzuki YMC is believed to be launching around the festive season of 2026. Needless to say, it will also have a Toyota sibling which will be launched a few months later. Both the SUVs will be based on the same platform as the eVX SUV. Reports have stated that the YMC MPV and its Toyota counterpart will not only be launched in the Indian market but the duo will be exported to many other countries. More details regarding the all-electric Maruti MPV will emerge in the coming months.

4. Maruti Entry-Level Electric Hatch (eWX)

Suzuki eWX

Maruti Suzuki eWX, also referred to as Wagon R EV by some sections of media, made its debut at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show in October. The Concept measures less than 3.4 metres in length while flaunting the ‘Tall Boy’ design which is similar to the Maruti Wagon R. The company touted the eWX as a ‘practical mini wagon’ which can be used for daily commuting in the city. The eWX Concept will have a driving range of 230 km on a single charge, which makes it a direct rival to the MG Comet EV in India. If Maruti Suzuki goes for maximum localization and somehow succeeds in pricing it around Rs 6-7 Lakh, then it could well become the most affordable EV in the Indian market. However, the official launch is still a few years away and more details are expected to be in public domain closer to the launch.
