In order to meet the rising demand, automakers are readying a wide range of new SUVs for the domestic market. These SUVs will come with high tech features, fuel efficient engines and spacious cabin. In this article, we bring you a list of upcoming new SUVs that will be launched in the Indian market in the next 1-2 year –
1. Hyundai Alcazar
Launch – H2, 2021
Expected Price – Rs 12 lakh – Rs 18 lakh
Competition – Tata Gravitas, Mahindra XUV500
The Korean automaker has started testing the new 7-seater version of the new generation Hyundai Creta SUV. The new model is rumoured to be called the Hyundai Alcazar. The new model will ride on 20mm longer wheelbase, while the length will be increased by 30mm. This will help Hyundai to create more space inside the cabin. The new model will also receive design changes in the form of flatter roof, slimmer C-pillar and new front grille. It is expected to be offered with two engine options – a 113bhp, 1.5-litre diesel and a 138bhp, 1.4-litre turbo petrol.
2. Renault Kiger
Launch – Q1, 2021
Expected Price – Rs 6 lakh – Rs 8 lakh
Competition – Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon
Similar to the Magnite, the Kiger will be based on the CMF-A+ modular platform. It will share the engine and gearbox options with the Japanese cousin. The new model will source the interior with the Triber MPV; however, it will have high-end features like factory-fitted sunroof, touchscreen infotainment system, around view monitor, automatic AC, etc.
3. Tata Gravitas
Launch – Q1, 2021
Expected Price – Rs 14 lakh – Rs 23 lakh
Competition – MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV500
This is basically the 6/7-seater version of the Harrier SUV. It will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that is capable of producing 168bhp and 350Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
4. Tata HBX
Launch – April-May, 2021
Expected Price – Rs 4.5 lakh – Rs 6 lakh
Competition – Maruti Ignis, Mahindra KUV100 NXT
Tata Motors will introduce the production version of the HBX concept in the second quarter of the 2021. The new model is based on the brand’s new ALFA modular platform that also underpins the Altroz hatchback. It will be powered by a 1.2L petrol engine producing 86bhp and 113Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and an AMT unit.
5. MG ZS
Launch – Q1, 2021
Expected Price – Rs 9 lakh – Rs 14 lakh
Competition – Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos
MG Motors will launch the petrol version of the ZS mid-sized SUV in the country in early 2021. The new model will be equipped with several segment-leading features like a large 10.1-inch touchscreen, automatic AC, cruise control, sunroof, etc. The international-spec MG ZS is available with two engine options – a 118bhp, 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and a 160bhp, 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol.
6. Hyundai AX
Launch – Late 2021
Expected Price – Rs 4 lakh – Rs 6 lakh
Competition – Maruti S-Presso, Tata HBX
The new Hyundai AX micro SUV will be positioned below the Hyundai Venue compact SUV. This model will also receive an electric derivative. This new micro-SUV is likely to be based on the k1 platform. It is likely to be offered with two engine options – a 1.2-litre NA petrol and Santro’s 1.0-litre petrol. Both manual and AMT options will be on offer.
7. Volkswagen Taigun
Launch – Mid-2021
Expected Price – Rs 10 lakh – Rs 16 lakh
Competition – Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos
Volkswagen will launch the production version of the Taigun mid-sized SUV in the mid-2021. The new model will be based on the locally developed MQB AO IN platform. It will be offered with two petrol engine options – a 110bhp, 1.0L turbocharged and a 148bhp, 1.5L turbocharged.
8. Skoda Vision IN
Launch – Early 2021
Expected Price – Rs 10 lakh – Rs 16 lakh
Competition – Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos
This model is based on the same MQB AO IN platform that underpins the Taigun. Not just platform, it will also share the engine-gearbox options with the German sibling. The new model will have high-level of localisation.
9. Next-Gen Mahindra XUV500
Launch – March-April 2021
Expected Price – Rs 12 lakh – Rs 18 lakh
Competition – Tata Gravitas, MG Hector Plus
The new-gen Mahindra XUV500 will be based on the new front-wheel-drive monocoque platform. It will also receive ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistant Features) such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Park Assist. It will be offered with two BSVI compliant engines – a 2.2L turbocharged diesel and a 2.0L turbocharged petrol.
10. Next-gen Mahindra Scorpio
Launch – Mid-2021
Expected Price – Rs 10 lakh – Rs 16 lakh
Competition – Tata Harrier, MG Hector
The next-gen Mahindra Scorpio will be based on the modified version of the ZEN3 platform that also underpins the new Thar. It will grow in size and will receive forward-facing third row of seats. The new model will share the engine options with the new XUV500; but in de-tuned form.
11. Mahindra XUV400
Launch – 2022
Expected Price – Rs 9 lakh – Rs 15 lakh
Competition – Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos
The new model is rumoured to be based on the Ford’s B platform, which also underpins the EcoSport and the Fiesta. The new model will be offered with two engine options – a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol.
12. Tata Blackbird
Launch – 2022
Expected Price – Rs 10 lakh – Rs 16 lakh
Competition – Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos
Tata Motors is working on an all-new mid-sized SUV, codenamed Blackbird. Details about the new model are yet to be revealed, but it is likely to be based on the Chery Tiggo 5X. Tata Motors could also use the ALFA platform to develop this SUV. Both petrol and diesel versions will be on offer.
13. Maruti mid-sized SUV
Launch – 2022
Expected Price – Rs 10 lakh – Rs 15 lakh
Competition – Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta
Maruti Suzuki is also readying an all-new mid-sized SUV for India. The new SUV will be developed under the Toyota-Suzuki partnership. It will be based on the Toyota’s new DNGA platform that also underpins the Raize and the Daihatsu Rocky.
14. Maruti Jimny
Launch – 2022
Expected Price – Rs 10 lakh
Competition – Mahindra Thar
Maruti Suzuki is readying the Jimny SUV for the Indian market. It is rumoured to be a 5-seater version and will be launched in 2022-23. The new model will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 103bhp and 138Nm of torque.
15. Ford C-SUV
Launch – 2021-22
Expected Price – Rs 13 lakh – Rs 18 lakh
Competition – Tata Harrier, MG Hector
Ford Motor Company is readying an all-new C-segment SUV, which will be based on the Mahindra XUV500. The new model will share the engine options with the Mahindra’s popular sibling. It will have completely different exterior and interior.
16. Honda Compact SUV
Launch – 2021-22
Expected Price – Rs 7.5 lakh – Rs 11 lakh
Competition – Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet
Honda is readying an all-new sub-4 meter SUV, which will make global debut in May 2021. The new model is likely to be based on the Amaze platform. It is expected to share the engine options with the new City, which includes a 1.5L petrol and a 1.5L diesel engine.
17. Citroen C5 Aircross
Launch – Q1 2021
Expected Price – Rs 28 lakh
Competition – Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson
Initially, the Citroen C5 Aircross SUV will come via CKD (completely knocked down) route and then assembled locally. It is likely to come with a 2.0L diesel engine paired to an 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Its power output will stand at 180bhp.
18. Citroen C21
Launch – End of 2021
Expected Price – Rs 7 lakh – Rs 10 lakh
Competition – Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet
The first locally developed Groupe PSA product will be an all-new sub-4 meter SUV, codenamed Citroen C21. The sub-4 meter SUV will be based on the Groupe PSA CMP (EMP1) platform. It is expected that the upcoming Citroen compact SUV will come with a single 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Likely to produce around 130bhp, this engine is expected to be offered with manual and automatic gearbox options.
19. Jeep 7-seater SUV
Launch – Late 2021
Expected Price – Rs 25 lakh – Rs 32 lakh+
Competition – Toyota Fortuner
Jeep is readying an all-new 7-seater SUV, codenamed Low-D SUV, which will be based on the Compass’s Small-Wide 4×4 platform. The new SUV is expected to get the 1.3-litre Turbo Flex engine with power output close to 180bhp. The diesel version will have a 2.0L turbocharged engine producing 173bhp and 350Nm of torqe.
20. Next-gen Maruti Vitara Brezza
Launch – 2022
Expected Price – Rs 7.5 lakh – Rs 11 lakh
Competition – Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet
Maruti Suzuki will launch the next-gen Vitara Brezza in the early 2022. The new model is rumoured to be based on the modified version of the existing platform; however, the company could use Toyota’s DNGA platform. The new model is also likely to receive a new 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine.
