VW T-Cross Based Seat Arona SUV Spied in India

It is no secret that Skoda and Volkswagen will launch at least 4 new locally developed products based on the heavily localised MQB AO IN platform. This is the same platform that underpins the new-gen VW Polo, Virtus, Nivus Coupe SUV, T-Cross, Skoda Kamiq and Seat Arona in global markets.

Interestingly, the left-hand-drive Seat Arona has been spotted testing in Pune. This model is likely to be used for internal benchmarking process or could act as a testing bed for the local components used in the MQB AO IN architecture. The VW Taigun and the production-version of the Skoda Vision IN concept will be the first models in India to be based on this platform.

The Seat Arona is 4.14 meters long; however, the Taigun and the Vision IN based SUV will measure over 4.2 meters in length. The new models will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Renault Duster and the Nissan Kicks. The Seat Arona is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine, which will also power the Taigun and the Vision IN. This engine is capable of producing 148bhp of power and 250Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG.

The Skoda Vision IN based mid-sized SUV is scheduled to be launched in the first half of 2021. On the other hand, the VW Taigun will go on sale in mid-2021. The next-gen VW Vento and the next-gen Skoda Rapid will also be based on the MQB AO IN platform. If reports are to be believed, Skoda and VW are also planning to introduce a sub-4 meter SUV and the next-gen Polo in India.

The new SUVs will also receive a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 110bhp and 172Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. The company is also considering introducing CNG versions of the new products. VW Group has already announced to not introduce diesel cars in India.
