VW Golf-based SUV launch in 2018; to share design with T-ROC concept

Volkswagen T-ROC compact SUV

Volkswagen is expected to launch a compact SUV, which will be positioned between the Taigun and Tiguan. The company showcased the T-ROC concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, which is likely to work as a base for exterior styling. The new SUV will be based on the Golf hatchback, and is reportedly to go on sale in 2018. It is likely to be offered in two wheelbase sizes- standard for European markets and large wheelbase for American and Chinese markets.

If media reports are to be believed that the upcoming SUV will not be a true off-roads, and offers crossover like styling. The SUV will be a 5-door layout which is seen on the Golf hatchback. It is equipped with features such as VW’s 4Motion AWD system, front and rear underbody protection, larger wheels, roof rails, larger fuel tank, hill descent control and others.

The compact SUV would be based on the advanced MQB platform, which will also underpin the next gen Golf. The compact SUV will not be a sub-4 metre SUV, and is likely to measure about 4.1 meters in length offered on the T-ROC concept. It is likely to be offered in both petrol and diesel fuel options along with the hybrid and electric versions. It is quite early to comment whether this crossover will make its way to Indian market. The company is currently focusing on bringing a sub-4 metre SUV to rival Ford EcoSport.
