Volkswagen to Launch Hyundai Venue Rival Compact SUV in India

VW compact SUV

Volkswagen had announced to launch 4 all-new SUVs in the Indian market in the next 2 years. While the Tiguan AllSpace is already on sale, the T-ROC 5-seater premium SUV will go on sale on March 18, 2020. The company will launch the Taigun mid-sized SUV to rival the Creta and Seltos in mid-2021. The fourth VW SUV for our market is most likely to be a sub-4 meter SUV.

The sub-4 meter Volkswagen compact SUV is expected to be launched in the country in the end of 2021. To be positioned below the Volkswagen Taigun, the new compact SUV will be based on the heavily localised MQB AO IN platform. This platform will also be used to develop the new Taigun, Skoda Vision IN based SUV, next-gen Vento and the next-gen Rapid. In fact, VW is also working on the next Polo hatchback which will also use this locally developed MQB AO IN platform.

The new Volkswagen compact SUV will take on the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon, Maruti Vitara Brezza and the upcoming Kia Sonet. Few global media reports suggest that the new sub-4 meter SUV, codenamed VW246, will be unveiled in concept avatar at the 2020 Sao Paulo Motor Show in November. This means that the new model will be a global compact SUV.

The new sub-4 meter SUV is also rumoured to be called the Volkswagen T-Track. The styling of the SUV is likely to be in-line with the new Volkswagen SUVs including the Taigun. It will have high ground clearance, upright front design and typical SUV-like body shape. The SUV is most likely to offer top-notch interior quality with several advanced connectivity options.

The upcoming Volkswagen compact SUV will be powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that offers two states of tunes – 108bhp/175Nm and 115bhp/200Nm. The 108bhp unit currently powers the VW Polo and the Vento. The compact SUV is likely to receive the more powerful version of the 1.0-litre engine. Transmission options are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
