In a bid to improve its shares, Volkswagen is aiming to launch a series of new products in the Indian car market. The company is all set to introduce the Polo and Vento facelift in the coming months, while it is also contemplating a compact sedan (Codenamed Polo Stuffe) and a compact SUV (VW Taigun). Moreover, VW is also planning to launch the new gen Beetle and Tiguan SUV in the country.

It was speculated that Volkswagen will present the Tiguan at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo; that didn’t happen. If media reports to believe, the company will launch this SUV to tap the mid-sized SUV segment which currently features the Mahindra XUV500 and Skoda Yeti. VW is expected to bring the car via the CKD route and assembling it locally; however, few industry sources suggest that the company may bring it through the CBU route initially. Moreover, Volkswagen is also working on a seven seater version of Tiguan, which might also come to India.

Based on the PQ35 platform that also underpins the Audi A3 and Jetta, the Tiguan SUV shares its underpinnings with the Skoda Yeti. The vehicle also resembles the new Jetta saloon. At the front, the vehicle gets a chrome grille with horizontal strips which are complemented by Bi-Xenon lamps with LED treatment.

The Tiguan SUV is equipped with touchscreen satellite navigation system, Bluetooth, MDI media interface with leads for iPhone and USB, CD/DVD player, SD card and digital Radio. The steering wheel, gear level and handbrake are wrapped in steering wheel, while the music controls are mounted on steering wheel. The rear seats can be fully foldable to increase luggage capacity from 470 to 1,510 litres.

The Volkswagen Tiguan will come with a choice of two engines. While the petrol version will get the 1.4l TSI engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission gearbox, which is capable of developing 130PS. The oil burner will get the 2.0L TDI motor that returns two states of power output- 140PS and 170PS, and the engine will come mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox.
