The long-awaited Volkswagen Taigun is scheduled to be launched in the Indian market in the next couple of months. The company has announced that the production of the mid-sized SUV will commence on August 18, 2021. Volkswagen is likely to announce prices of the SUV in the end of August or in the first half of September 2021.
Previous media reports claim that the Volkswagen Taigun launch will take place in the 3rd week of September, 2021, and customer deliveries will also commence at the same time. Official bookings for the SUV will commence in the first week of August. However, select VW dealers have already started accepting pre-bookings for the SUV at a token amount of Rs 10,000.
Volkswagen Taigun is based on the VW Group’s MQB AO IN platform, which also underpins the Skoda Kushaq. The SUV will ride on segment-longest wheelbase of 2,651mm. The new Taigun will measure around 4.2 meters in length, and will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Skoda Kushaq.
The VW Taigun will also mark the debut of brand’s new logo in the market. VW India has also started revamping its dealerships by increasing digitization and connectivity. The SUV will have a localisation levels of over 95%. A dealer claims that the new Taigun will be priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 17 lakh.
Volkswagen Taigun will share the engine and gearbox options with the Skoda Kushaq. It will be offered with two engine options – a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol. While the former is good for 113bhp of power and 175Nm of torque, the 1.5L engine produces 147bhp and 250Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual as standard, a 6AT with 1.0L petrol, and a 7-speed DSG with 1.5L petrol.
