Volkswagen Compact SUV (1)

The Volkswagen T-Sport will be based on the MQB AO platform that also underpins the sixth-gen Polo and the T-Cross SUV.

We informed you earlier that Volkswagen is working on a sub-4 meter SUV. The new SUV will be the spiritual successor of the Cross Polo, but it will have more SUV-ish stance with higher ground clearance. In fact, media reports claim that Skoda is also considering a sub-4 meter SUV which will eventually make its way to our market. The new Volkswagen sub-4 meter SUV is reportedly to be called T-Sport and will first go on sale in Brazil.

The Volkswagen T-Sport will be based on the MQB AO platform that also underpins the sixth-gen Polo and the T-Cross SUV. This model could also make its way to our market as VW Group is developing the Indianize version of the MQB AO platform. This platform will be used to develop cars up to 4.4 meter in length. Volkswagen will launch the India-specific T-Cross model based on the MQB AO IN platform.

Coming back to the Volkswagen T-Sport, the sub-4 meter SUV is likely to be introduced in 2020 in Brazil. In India, the SUV could go on sale by 2022. The company will first launch the T-Cross and the next-gen Vento (Virtus) sedan in India by 2021-22. Volkswagen has already confirmed that the T-Sport sub-4 meter SUV won’t be a derivative of the Polo hatchback. It will be an all-new model and will come with SUV traits.

The sub-4 meter Volkswagen T-Sport, if launched in India, will be able to avail tax benefits on cars below 4 meter in length. What’s interesting is that Volkswagen might also consider the sixth generation Polo for the Indian market. The new model is around 4.053 meters in length. VW could chop the new model to make it sub-4 meter hatchback; however, nothing official has been confirmed by the automaker.

Apart from this sub-4 meter SUV, Volkswagen is also working on an all-new Tarek SUV. Scheduled to be launched in 2021 in Argentina, this mid-sized SUV will rival the Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson. For the Indian market, the German automaker will launch the T-ROC and the Tiguan Allspace 7-seater model before the end of this year.
