Volkswagen T-ROC SUV Launching in India in 2019

Volkswagen T-ROC India Launch

Likely to be priced around Rs 17 lakh – Rs 20 lakh, the Volkswagen T-ROC SUV will be launched in India in the end of 2019

We informed you earlier that Volkswagen will launch an all-new compact SUV, which will be based on the T-Cross SUV currently on sale in the international markets. A new media report claims that before T-Cross, Volkswagen will launch the global T-ROC SUV in India. What’s more interesting is that the Volkswagen T-ROC will be launched in the country before the end of this year.

The report further claims that the Volkswagen T-ROC will come as a petrol-only model. The new model will be imported under the Government’s new scheme that allows 2,500 units to be imported without local homologation. However, the new model will have to carry certification from the home market and will have to meet the new safety and emission standards. In order to price the new model competitively, Volkswagen is likely to bear some of the cost of the high import duty. The VW T-ROC could be priced in the range of Rs 17 lakh – Rs 20 lakh.

Volkswagen is likely to introduce the fully-loaded model and will position it as a premium offering. This model will be positioned right between the Hyundai Creta and the Jeep Compass, which is same as the Tata Harrier. However, it is smaller in size than the direct rivals. The company would hope to create some hype for this model by offering a powerful engine, a sophisticated gearbox, feature and tech loaded cabin and an overall sense of refinement. The report further claims that Volkswagen is aiming to set a new benchmark and aspiration for the upcoming T-Cross compact SUV, which is scheduled to be launched in late 2020. The smaller VW T-Cross is expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Based on the Volkswagen’s versatile MQB platform, the new VW T-ROC measures 4,234mm in length, 1,819mm in width and 1,573mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,603mm. The SUV offers 445-litres of boot space, which can be further extended to 1,290-litres by folding the rear seat.

The European-spec Volkswagen T-ROC is available with 3 engine options – 3-cylinder 1.0-litre TSI, 1.5-litre TSI and the range-topping 2.0 TSI. It is also available with 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre TDI diesel engines. The India-spec model is likely to get the 2.0-litre TSI engine mated to 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The report claims that Volkswagen is experimenting with the T-ROC SUV. If the car manages to do well, the company might think of local assembly or manufacturing in India, post 2020.
